Shelley Husband is an excellent crochet instructor, and her book Beneath the Surface is a slim volume showing you how to create a beautiful crocheted blanket. Shelley writes clearly, as usual, and illustrates each step precisely. There’s very little that a beginning crocheter can’t do, especially if they are willing to stretch themselves and learn a couple of new techniques. The book starts with some very useful tips and tricks, and after the (very clear) patterns, Shelley has included all the crochet charts. After you make the squares, the surface crochet is applied in a different colour to provide depth and contrast. The technique of surface crochet is both striking and effective, and the resulting blanket (or whatever you choose to make) is stunning. Available in both US and UK (Australian) versions, this will make an excellent addition to your crochet library.
